CVT Nissan Qashqai - a reliable unit, but only subject to timely maintenance. Many owners ignore changing the CVT oil, believing that it is “filled for its entire service life.” This is a dangerous misconception: degraded fluid leads to belt slippage, overheating and costly repairs. If you decide to save money at a service station and make the replacement yourself, this article is for you.
We will analyze the process from A to Z: from choosing the original oil NS-3 to the nuances of removing the tray with magnets. We will pay special attention two filters (coarse and fine cleaning), which are often forgotten to change. The instructions are relevant for Qashqai J10 (2007–2013) and J11 (2014–2021) with CVTs JF011E And JF016E. Get ready: the work is dirty, but quite doable for a garage.
When and why you need to change the oil in a Qashqai CVT
Official regulations Nissan for Russia - every 60 thousand km or once every 4 years. But these figures are calculated for “ideal” conditions: moderate climate, no traffic jams and no towing. In reality, the interval should be shortened:
- 🏙️ Urban cycle (constant acceleration and deceleration): every 40–45 thousand km
- ❄️ Operation at temperatures below –25°C or above +35°C: minus 20% of the regulations
- 🚜 Towing a trailer or frequent driving with a full load: every 35–40 thousand km
- 🔧 After repairing the variator (replacing the belt, solenoids): mandatory flushing and oil change
Signs that it's time to change the oil already yesterday:
- 🔊 Crunching or humming when switching "D"/"R"
- ⚡ Jerks during acceleration (especially when “cold”)
- 🌡️ Overheating of the variator (temperature above 110°C on the display)
- 🛢️ The oil on the dipstick is black, with a burning smell or metal shavings
⚠️ Attention: If the variator starts to “kick” or a whistle appears, changing the oil may not help. These are symptoms of belt or solenoids wear. In this case, diagnostics are required at a service station with reading errors via Consult III Plus.
- I follow the regulations (60 thousand km)
- I change more often (40–50 thousand km)
- Only when problems arise
- Never changed
Which oil and filters to choose for replacement
There are no compromises here: only original oil Nissan CVT Fluid NS-3 (art. KE909-99932). Analogues like Idemitsu CVTF or Ravenol CVT may be suitable for partial replacement, but with a complete replacement there is a risk of incompatibility with the solenoids. Volume for complete replacement:
| Model Qashqai | CVT type | Oil volume, l | Article number of coarse filter | Article number of fine filter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| J10 (2007–2013) | JF011E | 7.8–8.2 | 31726-1XF0A |
31728-1XF0A |
| J11 (2014–2021, 1.6/2.0) | JF016E | 8.4–8.7 | 31726-3XF0A |
31728-3XF0A |
| J11 (2017–2021, 1.3 DIG-T) | JF017E | 7.5–7.9 | 31726-3XF0B |
31728-3XF0B |
Filters change necessarily! The coarse filter (metal mesh in the pan) is clogged with chips, and the fine filter (inside the variator) is clogged with friction wear products. Neglecting to replace them is tantamount to pouring fresh oil into a dirty bathtub.
Tools you will need:
- 🔧 10 and 14 mm head (for drain plug and pan)
- 🔨 Flat-head screwdriver (for prying off the tray)
- 🧲 Powerful magnet (for collecting chips)
- 🛠️ Sealant Loctite 574 (or analogue for CVTs)
- 🔩 Torque wrench (pan tightening torque - 8–10 Nm)
Before buying oil, check its authenticity: on the original canister NS-3 There should be a holographic sticker with the serial number, which can be checked on the Nissan website.
Preparation for replacement: draining the old oil and dismantling the pan
We carry out the work on flat surface (pit or lift). The variator must be warmed up to operating temperature (40–50°C), but not hot! This will ensure maximum drainage of waste.
Procedure:
- Remove the crankcase protection (4 x 10 mm bolts).
- Unscrew the drain plug (14 mm head) and drain the oil into a container with a volume of at least 5 liters. Be careful - the oil will be hot!
- After draining, unscrew the 18 pan bolts (10 mm head). Start at the corners, gradually loosening the fastening along the diameter.
- Pry the tray out with a flat-head screwdriver (be careful not to bend it!). There will be ~1 liter of oil left inside - prepare a rag.
At the bottom of the pallet you will find two magnets - they need to be cleaned of metal shavings. If there are a lot of chips (more than 1 teaspoon) or they are large (pieces >1 mm in size are visible), this is a sign wear of bearings or variator belt. In this case, after changing the oil, diagnostics are required.
Assess the color and smell of the waste (the norm is dark red, without burning)|Count the amount of chips on the magnets|Check the integrity of the rubber seal of the pan|Make sure that the drain plug is not deformed-->
⚠️ Attention: If, when draining the oil, you find in it silver metal filings - This is a sign of destruction of the planetary gear bearings. Changing the oil will not help here: disassembly of the variator is required.
Replacing filters: subtleties and pitfalls
In the variator Qashqai two filters, and both require attention:
1. Coarse filter (in the pan):
- 🔧 Dismantled together with the pallet. Just remove it from the latches.
- 🧹 Wash the mesh in kerosene or WD-40, then blow with compressed air.
- ❌ If the mesh is torn or deformed - only replacement!
2. Fine filter (inside the variator):
- 🔧 Requires removal of the hydraulic unit. Unscrew 10 bolts (10 mm head) and carefully remove the block without damaging the solenoids.
- 🔄 The filter is located in the hydraulic unit housing. Use pliers to remove it by pulling it up.
- ⚠️ When installing a new filter, make sure the O-ring is in place!
The mistake of many “garage technicians” is ignoring the fine filter. This causes the new oil to quickly become contaminated., and after 10–15 thousand km the variator begins to “kick”. Don't repeat this mistake!
How to check the condition of solenoids
With the valve body removed, inspect the solenoids (small cylindrical parts with springs). If they have a black coating or have become sour, they need to be replaced or washed in an ultrasonic bath. In 80% of cases, the “jerks” of the variator are associated with them.
Flushing the variator: is it necessary and how to do it correctly
Flushing the variator is a controversial topic. Officially Nissan It is not recommended, but in some cases it is necessary:
- ✅ If the oil has not been changed for more than 100 thousand km
- ✅ When buying a used car with an unknown history
- ✅ After repairing the variator (replacing the belt, bearings)
- ❌ If the oil is changed regularly, flushing will only do harm by washing off the protective film
How to rinse:
- After draining the old oil, refill 1–1.5 l fresh NS-3.
- Start the engine, alternately switch on modes “P”–“R”–“N”–“D” with a delay of 5–10 seconds. Don't gas!
- Drain the flushing oil and repeat the procedure again.
- Install new filters and fill the full volume of oil.
For flushing prohibited use:
- 🚫 Special “flushes for CVTs” (they are aggressive to the belt)
- 🚫 Kerosene, gasoline or diesel fuel
- 🚫 Other types of oils (for example, ATF or Dexron)
Flushing the variator is not a preventive measure, but a necessary measure. If the oil has been changed every 40–60 thousand km, there is no need for it. Instead, take the time to thoroughly clean the tray and magnets.
Filling with new oil and checking the level
The main thing here is do not overfill or underfill. For Qashqai critical both lack and excess of oil:
- 🔴 Underfilling → oil pump will capture air → overheating and belt wear
- 🔴 Overflow → oil foaming → pressure loss and slippage
Step by step instructions:
- Install a new fine filter and assemble the hydraulic unit.
- Apply a thin layer of sealant to the edge of the pan and install it in place. Tighten the bolts crosswise to a torque of 8–10 Nm.
- Install a new sealing washer on the drain plug and tighten it with a torque of 35–40 Nm.
- Fill in ~6 liters of oil through the filler neck (aka dipstick). Use a funnel with a fine mesh!
- Start the engine, warm up the variator to 40–50°C and add oil to the level between “MIN” and “MAX” on the dipstick.
Checking the level is a critical step. Do it only on a warm variator (after 10–15 km of driving) and with the engine running! The level should be strictly in the middle between marks. If the oil is above “MAX”, drain the excess through the control plug (aka filler plug).
To accurately monitor CVT temperature, use a diagnostic adapter ELM327 and program Torque Pro. The optimal temperature for checking the level is 45–50°C.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Even experienced craftsmen sometimes make mistakes, which later result in expensive repairs. Here are the most common:
| Error | Consequences | How to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Using non-original oil | Swelling of oil seals, belt wear | Buy NS-3 only from official dealers |
| Not replacing the fine filter | Rapid contamination of new oil | Change both filters every time you replace them. |
| Re-tightening of pallet bolts | Pan deformation, oil leak | Use a torque wrench (8-10 Nm) |
| Flushing the variator without the need | Washing off the protective film, accelerated wear | Rinse only when absolutely necessary. |
Another typical problem is incorrect installation of the probe. If it is not secured completely, oil may leak out of the filler neck. Make sure that the dipstick is inserted all the way and secured with a latch.
And the last tip: after changing the oil first 500 km avoid:
- 🚗 Sudden acceleration and braking
- 🏔️ Driving uphill with a full load
- 🔄 Frequent switching between “D” and “R” (for example, when parking)
FAQ: Answers to frequently asked questions
Can NS-2 oil be used instead of NS-3?
No! NS-2 has a different additive package and is not compatible with CVTs Qashqai after 2010. Using it will cause the belt to slip and overheat. The only exception is NS-2 can be topped up in emergency situations (no more than 1 liter), but then a complete replacement is required.
How much oil actually drains when changing?
With a partial replacement (without flushing), ~4–4.5 liters out of 8 are drained. The rest remains in the torque converter and channels. A complete replacement requires 2–3 drain-fill cycles or the use of a pressurized oil change machine (as at a service station).
What should you do if, after changing the oil, the variator begins to twitch?
Probable reasons:
- Incorrect oil level (check with a warm variator!).
- Airing the system (you need to switch modes “P”–“R”–“N”–“D” several times with a delay of 5 seconds).
- Poor quality oil or filters (drain and refill with original).
- Worn solenoids or belt (diagnostics required).
If the jerking does not disappear after re-checking the level, contact a service station for computer diagnostics.
Do I need to adapt the variator after changing the oil?
Officially Nissan does not require adaptation after oil change. However, if you feel "hesitant" when shifting, you can reset the adaptive settings through the diagnostic scanner (for example, Launch X431). To do this:
Выберите блок "Трансмиссия" → "Адаптация" → "Сброс обучения вариатора"
After the reset, drive 50–100 km in gentle mode so that the variator “remembers” the new operating conditions.
Can NS-3 be mixed with other oils?
Mixing allowed only with Nissan CVT Fluid NS-2 in a proportion of no more than 20% of the total volume. Mixing with ATF, Dexron or universal CVT fluids is strictly prohibited - this will lead to oil foaming and failure of the variator.
