Buying a new laptop without a pre-installed operating system (or with an inconvenient version of Linux) is a great way to save money, but you inevitably face the question of how to install it correctly Windows 10 or 11 on your own? The process seems complicated only at first glance. In fact, even a beginner can do it in 30-60 minutes if you strictly follow the instructions and avoid common mistakes.

In this article we will look at all stages — from creating a bootable USB flash drive to setting up the system for the first time. We will pay special attention laptops with UEFI and NVMe driveswhere standard methods often fail. You'll also learn how to get around common problems like missing Wi-Fi drivers or disk partitioning errors.

1. Preparation: what you will need for installation

Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need. Without these components, the process can stall at the most unexpected stage.

  • 💻 Laptop with the ability to boot from USB (check the model documentation - some ultrabooks require special key combinations).
  • 🖥️ Another computer (or the laptop itself, if it has a working OS) to create bootable media.
  • 🔗 USB flash drive volume at least 8 GB (16 GB is better for Windows 11). Attention: all data from it will be erased!
  • 📀 Official Windows ISO image from the Microsoft website (links below). Do not use pirated builds - they often contain viruses or reduced functionality.
  • 🔑 License key (not required for installation, but required for activation). For Windows 10, the key from the old version (7/8) is suitable, for 11 - only the original one.
  • Charger for laptop. Installation can take up to an hour, and draining the battery in the process will cause it to fail.

Where can I download the official ISO?

📊 Which version of Windows do you prefer?
  • Windows 10 (stability)
  • Windows 11 (new design)
  • Both versions depending on the tasks
  • I haven't decided yet

If you are installing Windows on a laptop with NVMe drive (For example, Samsung 980 Pro or WD Black SN850X), check in advance whether your model supports Secure Boot And TPM 2.0 (required for Windows 11). This information is available in the specifications on the manufacturer's website or in the BIOS.

💡

If you have a laptop with AMD Ryzen 5000/6000 or Intel 12th/13th generation, download the latest version of Windows 11 (23H2 or later) - it has better support for new hardware.

2. Creating a bootable USB flash drive: 3 proven methods

The bootable USB media is the basis of the entire process. Errors at this stage will lead to the fact that the laptop simply will not see the flash drive when booting. Let's look at three reliable methods.

Method 1: Official Media Creation Tool (recommended for beginners)

The simplest option from Microsoft, which automatically downloads the current version of Windows and writes it to a flash drive.

  1. Download the utility from official website.
  2. Launch the program and select "Create installation media for another computer".
  3. Specify the language, edition (usually Windows 10/11 Pro) and architecture (x64 for modern laptops).
  4. Select the USB device and wait for it to finish (takes 10-30 minutes).

Method 2: Rufus (for advanced users)

If you need to create a flash drive with bypassing TPM/Secure Boot requirements (for example, to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware), use Rufus.

  • 📌 Download Rufus with official website.
  • 📌 In the field"Device"select your flash drive.
  • 📌 Click "SELECT" and specify the path to the downloaded ISO image.
  • 📌 In the section "Image options" select "Extended Windows 11 installation (no TPM/no Secure Boot)" (if necessary).
  • 📌 Click "START" and confirm the formatting.
What to do if Rufus does not see the flash drive?

If the program doesn't show your USB drive, try:

1. Connect the flash drive to another USB port (better USB 2.0).

2. Format it in FAT32 through standard Windows tools.

3. Run Rufus as administrator.

4. Check the flash drive for errors using chkdsk E: /f (replace E: to your drive letter).

Method 3: Ventoy (for multi-boot)

If you frequently reinstall systems or test different OSes, Ventoy will allow you to write several ISO images onto one flash drive (Windows, Linux, utilities for hardware tests).

  1. Download Ventoy with official website.
  2. Install the program on a flash drive (all data will be erased!).
  3. Copy the Windows ISO image to the root directory of the flash drive.
  4. When booting from USB, select the desired image from the menu.

After creating a bootable USB flash drive be sure to check it out: connect to another PC and try to boot from it (in BIOS, select USB as the first device). If the flash drive is not detected, repeat the process with another program.

3. BIOS/UEFI setup: how to enable booting from a flash drive

Modern laptops use UEFI instead of the outdated BIOS, but the setup principle remains similar. The main thing is not to skip this step, otherwise the laptop will simply ignore your flash drive.

How to enter BIOS/UEFI?

  • 🔧 Lenovo: press F2 or Fn + F2 when turned on.
  • 🔧 HP: EscF10 (or F9 for boot menu).
  • 🔧 Asus, MSI, Acer: Del or F2.
  • 🔧 Dell: F12 (boot menu) or F2 (BIOS).

If your laptop turns on too quickly and you don't have time to press a key, try:

  • 🔄 Turn off the laptop, press the desired key and hold it when turning it on.
  • 🔄 For Windows 10/11: go to "Settings → Update & Security → Recovery → Special boot options" and reboot into BIOS.

What needs to be configured in BIOS/UEFI:

  1. Disable Secure Boot (if you install Windows 7 or bypass Windows 11 restrictions). Located in the section Security or Boot.
  2. Enable USB boot support (sometimes called Legacy USB Support).
  3. Set download priority:
    • In the section Boot move your flash drive to the first place (use the keys F5/F6 or +/-).
    • If there is an option Boot Mode, select UEFI (for Windows 10/11) or Legacy (for Windows 7).
  • Save settings (F10Yes).
  • ☑️ Check before exiting BIOS

    Done: 0 / 4

⚠️ Attention: On some laptops (eg. Lenovo Legion or ASUS ROG) after changing BIOS settings is required disable the "Fast Boot" feature in section Advanced, otherwise the flash drive will not be detected.

    4. Installing Windows: step-by-step process with pictures

If you have properly prepared the flash drive and configured the BIOS, after rebooting the laptop should automatically start booting from USB. Next follow the instructions:

    1. Language selection: Specify "Russian" (or other desired language) for all three fields. Click "Next".
    2. Starting the installation: Click "Install".
    3. Activation:

If you have a license key, enter it. If not, click "I don't have a product key". Windows will work without activation, but with restrictions (you cannot change the wallpaper, there will be reminders).

    4. Version selection: Select "Windows 10/11 Pro" (or other edition that was downloaded).
    5. License Acceptance: Check the box and click "Next".
    6. Installation type: Select "Custom: Windows installation only" (not "Update"!).

Now the most crucial moment - disk partitioning. Here, many people make mistakes, which then lead to data loss or incorrect operation of the system.

    What you will see:

    • 📊 Disk 0 — your main storage device (SSD or HDD).
    • 📊 If the drive is new, it will display as "Unallocated space".
    • 📊 If there were already partitions on the disk (for example, from the old OS), they need to be deleted.

How to properly partition a disk:

    1. If the disk is partitioned (for example, Disk 0 Partition 1, Disk 0 Partition 2), select each one in turn and press "Delete"until there's only one left"Unallocated space".
    2. Highlight unallocated space and click "Create".
    3. Specify the size (by default, the entire disk capacity will be offered - leave it this way if you do not plan to divide the disk into parts).
    4. Click "Apply". The system will automatically create additional service partitions (Reserved by the system, MSR - do not delete them!).
    5. Select the main partition (usually "Disk 0 Partition 2") and press "Next".
    💡

Never format a disk to NTFS manually during installation - Windows 10/11 will automatically select the correct file system (FAT32 for UEFI or NTFS for Legacy).

Next, file copying and installation will begin. The laptop may reboot several times - this is normal. Don't press any keys during reboots, otherwise the process will be interrupted.

Installation phase Approximate time What's going on
Copying files 5-15 minutes Windows files are transferred to the laptop disk.
Preparing for installation 2-5 minutes Unpacking and setting up system components.
Installing components 10-30 minutes Installing drivers, updates and system configuration.
First boot 1-3 minutes Initialization of equipment and preparation for configuration.

If the installation is stuck at the "Preparing for first use" longer than 20 minutes, check:

    • 🔌 Is the charger connected?
    • 🔧 Is the laptop overheating (especially important for gaming models like MSI GE76 or ASUS TUF).
    • 🔄 Try disconnecting all peripheral devices (mouse, keyboard, external drives).

    5. Setting up Windows for the first time: what to do after installation

After successful installation, you will be greeted with a welcome screen. It is important to configure the system correctly to avoid problems in the future.

    Basic steps:

    1. Region selection: Specify "Russia" (or your country). This will affect the date format, currency, and offers in the Microsoft Store.
    2. Keyboard layout: Add "Russian" and remove unnecessary languages.
    3. Network connection:

If the laptop does not see Wi-Fi, connect via cable (Ethernet) or use USB Wi-Fi adapter. After installing the drivers, the network will work.

    4. Accounting setup:
      • 📌 For home use, select "For personal use".
      • 📌 Create local account (do not link to Microsoft if you do not want data synchronization).
      • 📌 Create a strong password or leave the field blank (not recommended for security reasons).
  • Privacy Options: Disable all unnecessary options (for example, "Location", "Speech recognition") if you don't plan to use them.
  • After loading the desktop:

    • 🔧 Check activation: go to "Settings → System → Activation". If Windows is not activated, enter the key or use KMS activator (at your own risk).
    • 🔧 Update your system: "Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates". This will fix possible errors and install critical patches.
    • 🔧 Install drivers (more on this in the next section).
    💡

If after installing Windows 11 you have a black screen with a cursor, click Ctrl + Alt + Del, select "Task Manager", then "File -> Run new task" and enter explorer.exe. This will temporarily restore the desktop.

    6. Installing drivers: how to avoid problems with hardware

Clean Windows after installation does not know how to work with your hardware. Without drivers, Wi-Fi, sound, touchpad or discrete video card may not work. Let's figure out how to install everything you need.

    Driver installation methods:

    • 🔧 Automatically via Windows Update:

The simplest method, but does not always work for new equipment. Go to "Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates" and install all the suggested drivers.

    • 🔧 Manually from the manufacturer's website:

The most reliable way. Find your laptop model on the website Lenovo, HP, Asus etc., go to the section "Support → Drivers" and download:

      • 🖥️ Chipset (first thing first!).
      • 🔊 Audio (Realtek, Dolby, etc.).
      • 📶 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth (Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom).
      • 🎮 Video card (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel).
      • 🖱️ Touchpad (Synaptics, ELAN).
    • 🔧 Using utilities:

Manufacturers often offer their own programs for automatic driver installation:

      • Lenovo Vantage (for laptops Lenovo).
      • HP Support Assistant (for HP).
      • MyASUS (for Asus).
      • Dell Update (for Dell).

⚠️ Attention: Never use third party "driver packages" like DriverPack Solution or SlimDrivers. They often install unnecessary software, ads, or even malware. It's better to spend 10 minutes downloading from the official website.

How to check if all drivers are installed:

    1. Click Win + X and select "Device Manager".
    2. Check for devices with a yellow exclamation mark (🚨).
    3. If there are unknown devices, right-click on them → "Update driver" → "Automatic search".

Pay special attention to drivers for:

    • 🔋 Power management (otherwise the laptop may not charge correctly or discharge quickly).
    • 🔊 Audio (on some laptops, e.g. HP Pavilion, without the driver the speakers do not work).
    • 🎮 Discrete graphics card (for NVIDIA RTX or AMD Radeon download drivers only from official sites).

    7. Optimizing and customizing Windows after installation

Clean Windows works quickly, but after installing several programs, the system may begin to slow down. Here's what you should do right away:

    1. Disable unnecessary services and programs at startup:

    • 🔧 Click Ctrl + Shift + Esc → go to the " tabAutoload".
    • 🔧 Disable everything except the antivirus and necessary utilities (for example, NVIDIA GeForce Experience for gamers).

    2. Adjust the power supply for maximum performance (relevant for gaming laptops):

    • 🔋 Go to "Control Panel → Power Options".
    • 🔋 Select a scheme "High performance".
    • 🔋 For laptops with NVIDIA Optimus (For example, MSI GS66) set to NVIDIA Control Panel Preferred GPU - "High performance NVIDIA processor".

    3. Install the necessary programs:

Category Recommended programs What are they for?
Antivirus Kaspersky Free, Bitdefender, Windows Defender Protection against viruses and malware.
Browser Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge Fast and safe surfing.
Archiver 7-Zip, WinRAR Working with ZIP, RAR and other archives.
Office suite Microsoft Office, LibreOffice, OnlyOffice Editing documents, tables, presentations.
Media player VLC, MPC-HC, PotPlayer Plays video and audio of all formats.

    4. Set up backup:

Create a system restore point so that in case of failure you can roll back:

    1. Click Win + R, enter sysdm.cpl and press Enter.
    2. Go to the " tabSystem protection" → "Create".
    3. Provide a name (for example, "After installation") and wait for completion.

    5. Optimize the disk (relevant for HDD):

If you have a hard drive (HDD), and not SSD, defragment:

    1. Open "This computer", right-click on the disk C: → "Properties" → "Service" → "Optimize".
    2. Select the drive and click "Optimize".
    💡

For SSDs, defragmentation is not needed - it only shortens the life of the drive. Instead, enable the function TRIM (it is activated automatically in Windows 10/11).

    8. Solving common problems after installation

Even if you did everything correctly, problems may occur. Let's look at the most common ones and how to eliminate them.

Problem 1: The laptop does not see Wi-Fi (no adapter in device manager)

    Causes and solutions:

    • 📌 No driver: Download the driver for your model from the official website (see section 6).
    • 📌 Wi-Fi adapter is disabled:
      • Check the key combination (for example, Fn + F2 on Lenovo or Fn + F12 on HP).
      • Go to "Device Manager", find "Network adapters", right-click on your Wi-Fi module and select "Engage".
    • 📌 Antenna problem: If the laptop has been dropped or disassembled, check the connection of the antenna wires to the Wi-Fi module.

    Problem 2: Touchpad doesn't work

Most often this happens due to the lack of a driver. Solutions:

    • 🖱️ Download the touchpad driver from the manufacturer’s website (search by laptop model, for example, Synaptics or ELAN).
    • 🖱️ Check if the touchpad is disabled with a key combination (usually Fn + F6 or Fn + F9).
    • 🖱️ Go to "Device Manager", find "Mice and other pointing devices" and update the driver.

Problem 3: Poor performance (slows, lags)

    Possible causes and solutions:
