Have you turned on your laptop and suddenly the Internet has disappeared? Or has the device stopped seeing available Wi-Fi networks altogether? This situation is familiar to many - it’s especially annoying when the smartphone connects without problems, but the laptop stubbornly ignores the router. There can be dozens of reasons: from a banal disabled adapter to serious failures in the drivers or router settings.
In this article we will look at all possible reasonsreasons why the laptop does not connect to Wi-Fi - from the simplest to the most complex. You will learn how to check network adapter, reset the router settings, update drivers and even diagnose hardware problems. Instructions are suitable for Windows 10/11, macOS And Linux (taking into account the characteristics of each system). Don't worry if you are not a techie: we have explained everything in simple language, with pictures and step-by-step actions.
First let's go through basic steps - they solve the problem in 70% of cases. If it doesn’t help, let’s move on to advanced methods. At the end of the article you will find unique table with Wi-Fi error codes and their transcript, as well as FAQ with answers to frequently asked questions.
1. Check the obvious: 5 steps before deep diagnosis
Before digging into the settings, make sure that the problem is not minor. These steps will take no more than a minute, but often save hours of searching for causes.
- 🔌 Check the router's power supply. Make sure the indicators on the case are lit (especially Wi-Fi And Internet). If it only blinks Power, and the rest of the lights went out - the router does not distribute the signal.
- 📶 Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on on your laptop. On your keyboard, find the key with the antenna icon (often this
F2,F12or combinationFn + F-key). On macOS check the control panel in the top right corner. - 🔄 Reboot your router and laptop. Unplug the router for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Reboot the laptop through the menu
Start(not through the power button!). - 📱 Check Wi-Fi functionality on other devices. If the Internet does not work on your smartphone, the problem is with the router or provider. If only on a laptop, we look for the reason in it.
- 🛡️ Disable VPN or antivirus. Some programs (for example, Kaspersky, Avast or NordVPN) block network connections. Temporarily deactivate them.
If after these steps Wi-Fi works, the problem is solved. If not, move on to the next section.

2. Network adapter diagnostics: is it turned on?
The laptop may not connect to Wi-Fi simply because wireless adapter is disabled - physically or programmatically. Let's check it out.
On Windows:
- Click
Win + Xand selectDevice Manager. - Expand the tab
Network adapters. - Find a device with words Wireless, Wi-Fi or 802.11 (For example, Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200).
- If there is a down arrow next to the adapter, right-click and select
Engage device.
On macOS:
- Open
System Settings → Network. - From the left menu select
Wi-Fi. - Make sure the status
ConnectedorIncluded. If not, clickEnable Wi-Fi.
If the adapter is enabled but networks are still not shown, try update driver (more on this in section 4).
What to do if there is no network adapter in Device Manager?
This may mean that the adapter is disabled in the BIOS/UEFI or is physically damaged. Try:
1. Go to BIOS (when booting, click F2, Del or Esc).
2. Find the section Advanced → Onboard Devices or Wireless LAN.
3. Make sure the option is enabled (Enabled).
If the adapter is not in the BIOS, it may have become disconnected from the motherboard (relevant for older laptops).
3. Reset network settings: universal method
If the laptop sees networks, but does not connect (or constantly asks for a password), resetting the network parameters will help. This will delete all saved networks and return the settings to factory defaults.
On Windows 10/11:
- Open
Settings → Network and Internet → Status. - Scroll down and click
Network reset. - Confirm the action and restart your laptop.
On macOS:
- Open
Terminal(viaSpotlightorPrograms → Utilities). - Enter the command:
sudo rm /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist(you will need to enter the administrator password).
- Restart your Mac.
On Linux (Ubuntu/Debian):
- Open a terminal and run:
sudo nmcli networking offsudo nmcli networking on - If that doesn't help, delete all saved networks:
sudo rm /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/*
⚠️ Attention: After the reset, you will have to re-enter passwords for all Wi-Fi networks to which you previously connected. Save them in advance (for example, in a notepad).
Make sure that the router distributes Wi-Fi (the indicator is on)
Restart laptop
Try connecting to the network again
If it doesn’t help, go to the next section -->
4. Update and reinstall Wi-Fi drivers
Outdated or damaged drivers are one of the most common causes of Wi-Fi problems. Especially relevant after the update Windows or replacing the hardware part of the laptop.
How to update the driver on Windows:
- Open
Device Manager(Win + X → Device Manager). - Expand
Network adapters, find your Wi-Fi module (for example, Qualcomm Atheros or Broadcom). - Right click →
Update driver→Automatic search. - If Windows says that the driver is up to date, download it manually from the laptop manufacturer’s website (for example, support.lenovo.com for Lenovo or support.hp.com for HP).
How to reinstall the driver (if the update did not help):
- B
Device Managerright click on the adapter →Remove device. - Check the box
Remove driver programs for this device(if any). - Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically install the driver again.
For macOS And Linux There is usually no need to install separate drivers - they are included in the system. But if the problem appeared after the update, try rolling back to the previous version of the OS.
If after updating the driver Wi-Fi disappears completely, try rolling it back: in Device Manager, right-click on the adapter → Properties → Driver → Roll Back.
5. Problems with the router: settings worth checking
If your laptop won't connect to Wi-Fi but other devices are working fine, your router may be to blame. Here's what to check:
- 🔒 Security type. Make sure that in the router settings it is selected
WPA2-PSKorWPA3-PSK(notWEPorOpen network). Older encryption types may not be supported on modern laptops. - 📡 Wi-Fi channel. If the router works on the channel
13or14, some devices (especially from the USA) do not see it. Switch to channels1–11. - 🔄 Operating mode. In the router settings (
192.168.0.1or192.168.1.1) find the parameterWireless Modeand install802.11n/ac/ax(not802.11b/g). - 🔧 DHCP. Make sure the function
DHCP serveris enabled - otherwise the laptop will not receive an IP address automatically.
How to enter the router settings:
- Open your browser and enter in the address bar
192.168.0.1or192.168.1.1(the address is indicated on the router sticker). - Enter your username and password (usually
admin/adminoradmin/password from sticker). - Find a section
Wi-FiorWirelessand check the settings.
| Router parameter | Recommended value | What happens if it's wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Security type | WPA2-PSK or WPA3-PSK |
The laptop will not connect or will constantly ask for a password |
| Wi-Fi channel | 1–11 (for 2.4 GHz) |
The network may not appear or may be unstable |
| Channel width | Auto or 20/40 MHz |
Low speed or connection dropouts |
| Operating mode | 802.11n/ac/ax |
The laptop will not see the network or will connect at low speed |
⚠️ Attention: If you have changed the settings of your router and lost access to its panel, reset it to factory settings. To do this, press and hold the button Reset (usually it is recessed into the body and requires a paper clip) for 10–15 seconds.
6. Problems with IP address: how to fix the conflict
Sometimes the laptop does not connect to Wi-Fi due to IP address conflict or incorrect network settings. It's easy to check and fix.
On Windows:
- Open
Command line(Win + R → cmd → Enter). - Enter one by one:
ipconfig /releaseipconfig /renew - Restart your laptop.
If this does not help, assign the IP address manually:
- Open
Settings → Network and Internet → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks. - Select your network →
Properties. - Scroll down to
IP Settingsand selectManually. - Enter:
- IP address:
192.168.0.100(or192.168.1.100, if the router is on192.168.1.1) - Subnet mask:
255.255.255.0 - Gateway:
192.168.0.1(or192.168.1.1) - DNS:
8.8.8.8(Google) or1.1.1.1(Cloudflare)
- IP address:
On macOS:
- Open
System Settings → Network → Wi-Fi → Advanced. - Tab
TCP/IP→Configure IPv4: Manually. - Enter the same parameters as for Windows.
If after these steps the Internet works, but other devices no longer connect, return the settings to Automatic (DHCP).
If the Internet does not work after manually setting the IP address, check whether this value is occupied by another device on the network. To do this, enter on the command line ping 192.168.0.100 - if there is a response, the address is busy.
7. Hardware faults: when it’s time to take your laptop to service
If none of the methods help, the problem may be gland. Here are the signs of a hardware problem:
- 💻 Wi-Fi adapter does not appear in Device Manager (even after reinstalling the drivers).
- 🔌 The laptop does not see any network, although other devices work fine.
- 🔥 Before the problem, the laptop overheated or crashed.
- 🔄 The Wi-Fi indicator on the case does not light up (relevant for some models, for example, ASUS or MSI).
What you can do yourself:
- Check your Wi-Fi antennas. Some laptops (eg. Lenovo ThinkPad or Dell Latitude) antennas are connected to the adapter separately. If they move away, the network will disappear. To get to them, you need to disassemble the laptop (carefully!).
- Connect an external Wi-Fi adapter. Buy a USB adapter (such as TP-Link TL-WN725N) and check if it will work. If yes, the problem is in the internal module.
If you are not confident in your abilities, it is better to take the laptop to a service center. The average cost of diagnostics is 500–1000 rubles, replacement of a Wi-Fi module is 1500–3000 rubles (depending on the model).
⚠️ Attention: Do not try to disassemble the laptop if it is under warranty! This will invalidate it. Contact an authorized service center.
8. Wi-Fi error codes: what they mean and how to fix them
When connected to Wi-Fi Windows sometimes shows error codes. Here are the most common ones and their solutions:
| Error code | Reason | How to fix |
|---|---|---|
0x80070035 |
Network path not found | Check if DHCP is enabled on the router or set the IP address manually |
0x80072EFD |
Can't connect to the network | Reboot your router, check your password, or reset your network settings |
0x800704CF |
Group Policy restriction (often on corporate networks) | Contact your network administrator or temporarily disable Group Policy |
1068 |
The service is not running WLAN AutoConfig |
Open services.msc, find the service and start it |
651 |
Modem or driver problem | Reinstall the network adapter driver |
If your error is not in the table, try to find its explanation on the website Microsoft or enter the code into a search engine with the request Wi-Fi error [code] how to fix.
If an error appears when connecting to Wi-Fi "Failed to obtain an IP address", try reducing the DHCP pool in the router settings. For example, if the range 192.168.0.100–192.168.0.200, change it to 192.168.0.100–192.168.0.150.
FAQ: Answers to frequently asked questions
The laptop sees the network, but does not connect - it asks for a password again and again. What to do?
This is a serious problem with the saved credentials. Remove the network from known connections:
- On Windows:
Settings → Network and Internet → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks→ select network →Forget. - On macOS:
System Settings → Network → Wi-Fi → Advanced→ select network → click–(minus).
After that, connect again by entering your password.
Wi-Fi works, but there is no Internet (icon with an exclamation point). What's the matter?
This means that the laptop has connected to the router, but it does not have access to the Internet. Check:
- Is the provider cable connected to the router (indicator
WANorInternetshould burn). - Is the Internet paid for (sometimes the provider blocks access for non-payment).
- Router settings: perhaps lost
PPPoE-login (if you have Rostelecom, Beeline or another authorized provider).
Also try connecting the ISP cable directly to the laptop (if there is a port Ethernet) - if the Internet works, the problem is in the router.
The laptop connects to Wi-Fi, but the speed is very low (or interruptions). How to speed it up?
The reasons may be different:
- Channel overloaded. Use the program Wi-Fi Analyzer (for Android) or NetSpot (for Windows/macOS) to find a free channel and change it in the router settings.
- Weak signal. If the laptop is far from the router, try repeater or Mesh system.
- Restriction from the provider. Check the speed on the site speedtest.net - if it is lower than stated, call support.
- Driver problems. Update the Wi-Fi adapter driver (see section 4).
On the laptop, the cross on the Wi-Fi icon is lit, and the networks are not displayed. What is this?
This means that network adapter is disabled or faulty. First check:
- Is the adapter included in
Device Manager(see section 2). - Is it disabled by a key combination (for example,
Fn + F2). - Is it not installed?
Airplane mode(Win + A → Airplane mode).
If all else fails, try connecting an external Wi-Fi adapter - if it works, the problem is in the internal module.
Is it possible to connect to Wi-Fi without a password if it is saved on another device?
Yes, there are several ways:
- Via QR code. On Android open Wi-Fi settings, select network →
Share→ scan the QR from your laptop (camera required). - Via configuration file. On Windows export network settings with the command:
netsh wlan export profile name="ИМЯ_СЕТИ" folder="C:\"Then import the file to another laptop:
netsh wlan add profile filename="C:\ИМЯ_СЕТИ.xml" - Via router. Go to your router settings (
192.168.0.1) and look at the password in the sectionWi-Fi.
⚠️ Do not share Wi-Fi passwords with strangers - it is unsafe!
